Northside Xtreme Team Robotics
We took first place in the regional competition for 2012! We are the only homeschool team at this level. http://www.wane.com/dpp/news/local/lego-tournament-one-of-largest-in-state
We are Northside Xtreme Team from Northside Homeschool Coop Ltd,
a FIRST® LEGO® League team in Fort Wayne.
The FLL® challenge this year (2012) is Senior Solutions. We are learning about the challenges we face as we age. We have a senior partner, have met with residents at Kingston, investigated available solutions through James Medical and interviewed grandparents, aunts, uncles & friends and neighbors. We even wrapped our bodies with cardboard to simulate mobility restrictions while we tried to unload groceries.
Senior Solutions is a research project; it contains elements of a performance for the judges and we developed an innovative solution to the contamination. Finally, the challenge includes a robot competition using a LEGO®MINDSTORMS® NXT 2.0. Here is our table and being interviewed at competition. (We had the 5th highest score at our qualifier on the robot competition!):

Our innovative solution to the difficulty of picking up objects when we have difficulty bending is an assistive device which is so compact that it fits in a pouch about the size of an eyeglass case which can be attached easily to a cane, walker, wheel chair, and belt or carried like a wallet or purse. THE BENDING BUDDY! This device starts out as an extendable pointer/reacher and incorporates multiple attachments through its magnetic end. These include a sticky surface for picking up light objects such as papers and parking tickets (the inspiration for this project), a hook for things like a dropped dish towel, magnet for keys or other metal items. It can lift many things, just use your imagination. Simply attach end of your choice, extend, get the item, retract and voila you have it! Then simply collapse and return the device to the organizer pouch. That’s it THE BENDING BUDDY!
The experience on this team builds leadership skills we will take into our future.
